That’s where harm happens. Not because someone ignored a rule, but because the rule wasn’t part of the system’s architecture in the first place.
Autonomy Changes Everything
The more autonomy you give to AI, the more critical it becomes to build real safeguards into the system itself. That includes how the system is trained, how it’s prompted, what it can access, and what actions it can take. And it means being honest about where your current governance practices fall short.
You can’t just throw an AI policy into your handbook and hope for the best. You need governance frameworks that match the speed and scope of the systems you’re using. That includes scenario planning, risk mapping, and thoughtful restrictions—not just on data access, but on behaviors, delegation chains, and interactions between agents.
